Tech companies call for major changes to Snoopers’ Charter
Six of the largest tech firms have called for major changes to the Investigatory Powers Bill, dubbed the Snoopers’ Charter. One of the main criticisms – made by Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Twitter, Yahoo, and Apple – is that the bill attempts to weaken users’ security by ordering ‘the removal of electronic protection where reasonably practicable. The bill also establishes extraterritorial jurisdiction, and would therefore allow the UK to force companies to comply even if they are not based in the UK.
