UK Internet users targeted by Brexit-themed phishing emails
Reports from security companies, cited by BBC, show that Internet users in the UK have been targeted by an increasing number of Brexit-themed spam phishing emails. Symantec reported that, after the publication of the referendum results, it has identified a 392% increase in spam emails that use Brexit in the subject line. The number of emails blocked by the security company on behalf of their customers increased from around 80 000 between 9 and 23 June, to almost 400 000 between 24 June and 5 July. The spam emails involve a phishing scheme, users being encouraged to click on a link or download a file that then installs malware on to their computer or redirects them to a malicious website.
