UK Parliament votes on Snoopers’ Charter
The UK House of Commons has debated the Investigatory Powers Bill for the first time. After hours of debate, and 266 votes in favour, the bill will now be debated at Committee stage. The bill, designed to overhaul the various regulations on investigations in the UK, is seen as controversial mainly due to the data retention requirement that will be imposed on service providers. Among the concerns expressed by MPs is the fact that the bill allows ‘too many organisations too much access to sensitive data’.
