Venezuela blocks access to Tor Internet browser
Rights advocacy group Access Now has reported that the Tor browser is now blocked in Venezuela. The article quotes Venezuelan technologist and journalist Melanio Escobar, who said ‘The government is moving forward to be as closed as China or Iran’. Writing about the blockage, Marrian Zhou of c|net reminded readers that ‘Venezuela is notorious for Internet censorship’, citing a Freedom House report scoring Venezuela with a 63 out of a possible 100 on Internet freedom, based on the difficulty of Internet access, limits on content, and violations of user rights. Zhou noted that ‘in comparison, China scored 87 out of 100, Iran ranked 85, and Turkey scored 66’.
