Artists represented by Universal Music Group (UMG) and songwriters represented by Universal Music Publishing Group will return to TikTok after a new licensing deal has been reached.

A joint statement on the UMG’s website notes that ‘UMG and TikTok will deliver improved remuneration for UMG’s songwriters and artists, new promotional and engagement opportunities for their recordings and songs and industry-leading protections with respect to generative AI.’

This means new monetisation opportunities for UMG artists and UMGP songwriters, along with global campaign support. TikTok will also develop artist-centric tools like ‘Add to Music App,’ tools to improve artist and songwriter attribution, improved data analytics, and work with UMG to remove unauthorised AI-generated music from the platform.

Music by UMG artists and UMGP songwriters was muted on TikTok videos from 31 January 2024, when the previous licensing deal between UMG and TikTok expired. The two companies are now working to return UMG music to TikTok expediously.
